What is Coffee Jelly?

Coffee jelly is a famous dessert that is–from the name itself–made into a jelly using coffee and sugar. It used to be common in Western countries, especially in areas of Europe and in North America.

But nowadays, it is more common in Japan where it can be found in most restaurants and local stores. Along with the coffee and sugar are condensed milk, and all-purpose cream to make a sweet and nice treat.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Coffee

To make things easier and straightforward for this recipe, we used instant coffee powder to easily make coffee. But if you want to have a richer taste when it comes to the coffee, you can use brewed coffee made from ground coffee beans, just remember to add sweeteners with it so it won’t be too bitter.

You will either be using gelatin or gulaman to make the coffee jelly. Refer to the section below for more details about this.

Aside from these, you will be using other regular pantry ingredients like sugar, cream, and condensed milk. If you are filling up your pantry, here’s a handy shopping guide:

Using Gelatin or Gulaman

When it comes to making the coffee jelly, there are actually two types of ingredients you can use. One is what we are going to use her in this recipe–the gelatin powder. The other ingredient is the jelly powder, or what is also called gulaman or agar-agar.

You can use the gulaman or the agar-agar as a substitute for gelatin, especially if you’re a vegan or a vegetarian. This is because the jelly powder is made out of seaweeds, making it a plant-based ingredient.

Gelatin, on the other hand, is made out of animal collagens and bones. So if you’re strict when it comes to your diet, you should consider what type of ingredient you will use.

Although these ingredients can be interchangeable when it comes to making this dessert or treat, there are subtle differences in the end-result of the jelly itself. The jelly made out of gelatin will result in a more creamy texture while the jelly made out of gulaman will result in a more firm texture.

The good thing about using agar-agar is that it can be set even at room temperature, and it can be ready faster than the gelatin.

So it is advisable to use this as a substitute if you don’t have enough time to prepare the coffee jelly. Just remember to dissolve the agar-agar first in water before bringing it to a boil so it can properly set.

Equipment You’ll Need

  • Saucepan- You will be needing a saucepan or a similar sized pan to cook the gulaman or jelly in this dessert.
  • Refrigerator- You will also need refrigerator space to cool the gulaman and the coffee jelly before serving.

How to Make Coffee Jelly

It only takes two main steps when it comes to making the coffee jelly, so it is a pretty quick and easy job once you have all of the ingredients, and most of  them are probably in your kitchen right now.

First step is to make the coffee jelly cubes. And the second step is to mix our liquid ingredients to make a nice and sweet drink where we will put the coffee jelly cubes.

A general tip when it comes to making the jelly cubes, you need to keep in mind that it will take at least a couple of hours for it to be fully done because you are going to have to let the mixture chill and solidify into a jelly first before you can slice it into cubes so make sure that you have enough time to prepare.
