There is no question that donuts are really an irresistible dessert. And right now we are going to make this delicious dessert which can easily be made in your house–the Milo Donuts! Continue to read on below to learn how to make this and see some trivia, along with tips and tricks.

What is a Milo Donut?

Doughnuts or donuts, in general, are a type of dessert food that is fried and is then partnered with various toppings, ranging from salty to sweet, such as sugar, chocolate, maple, strawberry, among others–and even peanuts.

It is traditionally made to have a hole in the middle of it, which is what is now called the doughnut ring. Nowadays donuts may also be interchangeable with a much easier form to make called donut balls or donut holes. For this recipe, we are going to make these doughnuts out of Milo, and topped with Milo!

Milo, on the other hand, is a brand of chocolate and malt powder which is mixed with water or milk to make a drink. It is a popular drink here in the Philippines usually associated with breakfast meals to power up your day, especially with kids who are into sports.

Aside from making it into a beverage, this powdered chocolate is a perfect ingredient to use for other recipes, and more commonly for desserts, because of its sweet chocolatey taste. And it is a perfect substitute for having a choco-flavored donut.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Milo

If you are in the Philippines, Milo is an easy chocolate drink brand to find. You’ll see it from sari-sari stores to supermarkets. Common alternatives you can use are Ovaltine and Nesquik.

Milk

For the dairy, we will use evaporated milk since it is packed with more flavor. As an alternative to this, you can use fresh milk for the dough, and condensed milk for the glaze.

Bakery Ingredients

We will also use several ingredients used in baking like flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and butter.

Aside from these, we will also be using other regular pantry ingredients like sugar, salt, egg, and powdered milk. If you are filling up your pantry, here’s a handy shopping guide:

Equipment You’ll Need

  • Deep Fryer- If you have an electric deep fryer, that’ll be a convenient tool to use in cooking the doughnuts. If you don’t, you can always use deep pans, pots, and casseroles over a stovetop.

How to Make Milo Donuts

To start, we have to keep in mind that we are going to do two separate processes. First thing you need to do is to make the doughnuts, of course. And then while you’re doing that or after doing that, you can then proceed and make the glaze as stated in the recipe, which is definitely easy.

To make things even more Milo chocolate-y, the donuts we are going to do are also Milo-based. When preparing the Milo donuts, it is recommended to have a donut pan available with you, so you can make those fun and exciting donut rings easier. But other manual methods can also be done, and you also have the option to roll them into munchkins instead to make things even more easier.

When frying the donut batter, it is generally hard to see if the doughnut is already cooked since it is already dark brown in color, unlike normal doughs where you can see when the dough is cooked because it turns golden brown. A good tip for this is to stick a toothpick in the middle of the donut, and if it comes out clean, the donut is done cooking.

Topping Choices

While here are the most basic toppings recommended here in this recipe, the fun doesn’t stop there! There are various other toppings you can add for this delicious Milo donut, since this chocolate-flavored goodness can be partnered with a dozen other ingredients, after all. Here are some other suggested toppings you can opt to add:

  • Choco sprinkles
  • Rainbow sprinkles
  • Crushed chocolate bars
  • Cereal bits
  • Crushed chocolate cookie sandwich

These are only common donut toppings, but if you want to go wild with it, feel free to do so.

How To Serve Milo Donut

This donut is best served fresh and warm as a snack or dessert. This is where the texture is soft and chewy. Pairing it with coffee or tea is a good way to go.

How To Store and Reheat Milo Donut

When storing doughnuts, make sure it is completely cool, then transfer it to a clean food container with lid. You can place this in a refrigerator for up to 3 days.

To reheat, you can use a microwave oven but it’ll be better to use a conventional oven or an oven toaster. Set the temperature at 175 C (347 F) and heat for at least 5 minutes.
