Ahh, the Milo Jelly, yes, you read it right! For all you morning people, there’s always a substitute for coffee, in case you’re having the bad acids because of it or maybe you just don’t want the taste of a coffee and its effects. And a common substitute for that is a hot chocolate drink, or the Milo.
And it does not only end there, desserts which involve coffee–such as the coffee jelly, can also be replaced by Milo Jelly! So what are you waiting for, read on below to see how to make this delicious dessert and see some tips and tricks along the way.
What is Milo Jelly?
The Milo Jelly is basically cubes of jelly made out of the famous powdered chocolate drink and is partnered with a thick sweetened cream commonly made as a dessert. This is a variation of the more famous dessert–the coffee jelly. They are pretty much the same thing, the only difference is the ingredients used.
Milo is a famous brand of chocolate and malt powder that is then made into a beverage. It is promoted as an energy drink and as a great way to start your day full of activities, especially targeted to kids who are active in sports. The Milo powder, alternatively, can be used in other various recipes and is a perfect ingredients for desserts because of its chocolatey sweetness.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Milo
If you are in the Philippines, Milo is an easy chocolate drink brand to find. You’ll see it from sari-sari stores to supermarkets. Common alternatives you can use are Ovaltine and Nesquik.
Cocoa Powder
When choosing a cocoa powder, it is best to pick unsweetened variants so that it won’t make the dessert too sweet.
Milk
When picking evaporated or condensed milk, I suggest that you look for the words ‘sweetened condensed (or evaporated) filled milk’ in the label. However, you can still use ‘condensed (or evaporated) creamer’ variants if you are on a budget.
Gelatin
For the jelly, you can either use gelatin powder or jelly powder. Please refer to the section below to see their differences.
Aside from these, we will also be using other regular pantry ingredients like cream and sugar. If you are filling up your pantry, here’s a handy shopping guide:
Jelly Powder or Gelatin Powder
When making jelly, there are actually two types of ingredients you can use, one is what we have here in the recipe–the gelatin powder, and another is the jelly powder, or what is also called gulaman or agar agar.
Agar agar is commonly used as a substitute for gelatin especially if you’re a vegan or a vegetarian, because this jelly powder is made out of seaweeds, so it is plant-based. Gelatin, on the other hand, is made out of animal collagens and bones.
Although these ingredients can be interchangeable when it comes to making this recipe, there are subtle differences in the end-result of the jelly. The jelly made out of gelatin will result in a more creamy texture while the jelly made out of agar agar will result in a more firm texture.
The good thing about using agar agar is that it can be set even at room temperature, and it can be ready faster than the gelatin. So it is advisable to use this as a substitute if you don’t have enough time to prepare the Milo jelly. Just remember to dissolve the agar agar first in water before bringing it to a boil so it can properly set.
Equipment You’ll Need
- Cooking Pot (Kaldero)- You may need a cooking pot or deep casserole when cooking a big batch, however, saucepans will do for small batches.

How to Make Milo Jelly
Preparing the Milo jelly is super easy! You will be done making these delicious desserts without even breaking a sweat. You only need to think about two simple processes: First is the preparation of the Milo jelly cubes, and then the next one is making the drink itself with the jellies.
Before making the jelly cubes, you need to keep in mind that it will take at least a couple of hours for it to be fully done because you are going to have to let the mixture chill and solidify into a jelly first before you can slice it into cubes so make sure that you have enough time to prepare.
How to Serve and Store Milo Jelly
For me, Milo jelly is best served chilled as a dessert or even as a snack. However, you can always eat this even at room temperature if you prefer. To store, since this is a refrigerated dessert dish, simply place back in the refrigerator or chiller and consume within 2 to 3 days.
