What is Milo Pastillas?

Milo Pastillas With Milo Pack

Pastillas is a dessert made of milk, usually from carabaos, which is hardened and made into a candy in the shape of a cylinder, or a pill. The word itself is a Spanish word which literally means “pills”. And to be more specific, it is actually called pastillas de leche in full, which means milk pills.

This sweet delicacy is known to have originated in Bulacan. And of course, this is because of the Spanish influence, since they used to supply various goods here and there.

Milo, on the other hand, is a brand of chocolate and malt powder which is mixed with water or milk to make a drink. It is a popular drink here in the Philippines usually associated with breakfast meals to power up your day.

This powdered chocolate is a perfect ingredient to use as an additive for the delicious pastillas, to change things up from the usual, in case you get bored from the common desserts you always eat, right?

Ingredients You’ll Need

Milo

We chose Milo as a chocolate drink powder because of its popularity and accessibility of purchasing. You can also use a different brand for this recipe like Ovaltine and Nesquik.

Milk

We will be using powdered milk in this recipe and sample brands are Bear Brand, Nido, Jersey, Birth Tree, and Anchor.

Condensed Milk

Condensed milk doesn’t only add a milky taste but will serve as a sweetener and binder for this recipe. I suggest that you use an actual sweetened condensed milk brand but you can also use the cheaper condensed creamer or condensada.

Butter

We used pure butter for this recipe but as an alternative to this, you can also use margarine.

Equipment You’ll Need

  • Mixing Bowl- This is a no-cook dessert and it means we will be only mixing the whole time. You will need a sturdy large mixing bowl for this.
  • Sifter- Using a sifter or a strainer could be optional but vital if you want a good quality end result. Powdered products tend to form chunks and a sifter will prevent these from going to your mixture.

How to Make Milo Pastillas

Making Milo pastillas is an easy task. All you have to do is combine the ingredients and shape them. So first of all, to make things easier, we are going to mix the liquid ingredients in a separate bowl from the powder ingredients.

Prep Tip: A general tip for the powdered ones is to use a strainer or sifter when pouring them into the bowl to avoid large chunks of powder getting into the bowl. This will help for a finer texture of the pastillas.

Once we’re done with the two separate mixtures, we are now going to combine them. Add them in slowly together and check for the consistency while doing so. You can add more condensed milk if you find the mixture thick or dry. Or you could add more powdered milk if you find the mixture sticky.

Afterwards, you can now get small portions of it and shape them into balls, log shapes, nuggets, or any shape you want!

Before we serve, let’s get a strainer or sifter and dust the pastillas with Milo powder. This will help improve the taste, the look, and it won’t be sticky to hold. That’s it, your milo pastillas are done!

How To Serve and Store Milo Pastillas

Milo pastillas, or pastillas in general is a dessert candy and can be serve after a meal or during snack time.

Since we won’t be adding any preservative here, store these pastillas in an airtight food container in a cool and dry place. Your pastillas will last for a week in room temperature and longer if you refrigerate them.
